SWTOR server queues: it’s about the flow

For those with early access, there’s been a fairly regular issue of queues on most servers.

It’s not surprising by any means, and Bioware state they’re monitoring it closely (I’d be a bit worried if they weren’t!). Stephen Reid has posted an update on the SWTOR forums, on behalf of Jeff Hickman, Executive Producer of Live Services (i.e. Head Server Dude):

“We know there have been questions about the queues on the servers, so we wanted to take a moment to give you some insight.

In order to ensure that the service would be smooth and stable, we staged how we brought people into the Early Game Access program, adding people in waves. As you know, there are a lot of folks who want to play the game right now and we want to make sure they have lots of people to play with. Balancing this with figuring out when to bring new servers online to help alleviate the size of the queues is part art and part science. On one hand, you do not want people to wait too long – on the other hand, you want to make sure that people have a dynamic, engaging community to play with for long after launch. Either way, we have one clear objective – to make sure folks have fun.

While we can’t promise that there won’t ever be queues, we can promise you that we are taking this matter seriously and constantly reviewing them to make sure that they are manageable and reasonable.”

Ironically, the desire for Oceanic players to hang out as a community has arguably increased server queues on the unofficial PvE and PvP servers, meaning Oceanic players are reporting long queues during the day and into early evening. That’s likely to shake out as more servers come on board and some players shift servers.

When it’s all said and done it’s hard to disagree with Jeff Hickman: it’s a balancing act between queues and players wandering around struggling to find people to group with. The only certainty is that Bioware will be doing what they can to find that balance, even if they don’t always get it right.

How have you found the queues so far?

Comments

  1. Hating it atm!
if there was some kind of Q protection it wouldnt be to bad. but if you dropout of the Q u get put to the back of the line which has happened to me a few times.
was expecting Qs but not to this extent

    • The queues are extreme but it doesn’t bother me too much. I just queue up two hours before I want to play. What sucks is requeuing after a DC

  2. yeh ques are brutal atm, its like 9pm saturday cst though. its to be expected, my only issue is that im getting the occasional error 9000/2200 hopefully i wont get any when i finally get through 2k people

  3. The q’s a huge. But I’m ok with atm cause that means i read my revan novel I got a couple weeks ago. 1 hour 30 minutes is brutal, but that’s not what annoys me. It’s all the hate from the Americans saying ‘get off our server, you dirty ***** need to get your own server this ours.’ That what annoys me. Show now I just turn off my chat window.

    • Same sick of them bitching at us.. Mention the word Aussi and its nothing but pure hate from them.

      • Keep in mind, the majority of people saying that are probably angry teenagers. We American’s have had an influx of angry, pampered teens who like to spout off at the mouth. This of course isn’t necessarily the majority of teens, but people who say those things stand out.

With that being said, don’t assume that all Americans are like that or feel that way. I for one am an American and enjoy talking to and chatting with many of my “Oceanic” friends.

To blame one side or the other is just a way to look past the real issue, however I’m hoping that EA and Bioware were smart enough to know how to handle this. Otherwise we’ll never get to play as official release comes out and queues last days.

  4. Its horrendous. Biggest issue with the game is getting to play it! Great once you’re in.

  5. So far I haven’t waited longer than 15 minutes. Glad when I got in on day one, I chose a “lightly” populated server. I see some servers with nearly 2 hour queues, but most around in the 10-20 minute range. There are some servers without queues (but not many!)

  6. its just annoying, i pre ordered and i want to be able to play when i login not 45 min later.. and then i get on and while im questing it just says “error loading your account” and kicks me off so then im back in the 45 min que

  7. queues are pathetic and saying “the desire for Oceanic players to hang out as a community has arguably increased server queues on the unofficial PvE and PvP servers”

is as you say ARGUABLE, as this is a poor excuse. It’s not oceanic people’s fault nor American’s, nor Europeans nor ANYONE but THE EA/BW….

    • True, it’s a valid point, we’re not specifically to blame, but we’ve probably helped make the issue more prominent 😉

  8. Somehow picked Swiftsure, the unofficial Aussie server. Waited four hours tonight, cleaned my apartment and watched a movie, and still had 238 people to go. I love the Aussies, so I’d ask that they can get their own servers, or at least spread to a wider circle of servers.

Funny thing though, is there are still grouping problems. I was trying to do Trouble in Deed, and needed just one more person. No such luck. Had to leave the quest alone.

  9. All three times I’ve been in a queue I’ve had to wait for 4-5 hours to get in-game – not too much fun to be had there. A guild member of mine suggested that Bioware should add some sort of simple minigame to play while waiting.

I certainly do hope that they are just artificially keeping server population caps low until launch as a few people I’ve talked to seem to believe is the case. If not, then I hope that most of the yanks (though not all) decide to reroll soon.

  10. Blame the idiots who don’t logout and stay afk in game while they are sleeping.

  11. the problem is that when they started early access i picked frostclaw and all was fine.

the next day another early access and friends of people on my server wont pick another server because there friends are on frostclaw then day 3 happened 600 in a queue day 4 900 in queue all because friends who had staggered start times had to pick servers there friends were on even if they were full we need server expansion not new servers

  12. Consider yourself lucky to be able to get in at all. For some of us the patching process crashes leaving us no access at all.

  13. Contemplating re-rolling on another server. Have a lvl 19 Sith Warrior on Swiftsure but the queuing is a real issue. Have 6 friends onthe same server and we are all contemplating moving to another PVP server. Any suggestions on what alternative we can use where we will find other Aussies. Can TOROZ nominate another server to roll on???
