PvP’ers Get Big Love In Next TSW Update

Funcom’s Senior PvP Designer, Rasmus Harr, has done up a nice little blog post about some pretty big PvP changes happening for The Secret World with the upcoming Episode #4 content update Big Trouble in the Big Apple.

Fundamental overhaul is maybe a better way to summarise what’s coming:

  • Improved rewards in Fusang
  • Total wiping of White Marks of Venice
  • A new PvP mission called The Underdogs that helps factions struggling to be competitive
  • Cross-dimension PvP in Fusang
  • Changes to match-making

It’s a hefty list of changes, so it’ll be interesting to see how they go down. If you’re a TSW PvP’er, let us know what you think!

SWTOR Free To Play Preview #2: Cartel Market

BioWare have released a short vid with a little more info on the Cartel Market F2P’ers will be able to access:

As you’d expect, BioWare are going in hard on F2P given what’s at stake – what’s your take on what you’ve seen so far?

The Naked Gamer: Age and Gaming

Age and gaming

The Naked Gamer is a regular opinion column that strips back the superficialities and looks at the flesh underneath. If you’ve got a topic you’d like discussed, drop columnist Kristy Green a line!

Well, it’s that time again. The time when my age gains a +1 and my experience bar resets for another year. Normally around this time I take a moment to reflect over the past 365 days and my life in general, although this time it’s a little different as it’s one of the big ones. You know the ones, where you are meant to make a big deal and you have to start ticking that older age bracket box.

Usually I will spend two weeks moping around and considering why I still claim the title of Gamer.  Even though I have always been on the younger side of the average gamer age, and probably always will be as the average age grows older with me, I find that society seems to continue thinking of gaming as child play. They seem to prefer to make up their own mind and ignore anything that might seem contrary.

Every year I am asked when I am going to grow up and stop playing with children’s toys. I am told that as a female my gaming hobby is either an attention seeking pastime or something I should finally give up to do things more worthwhile. I’ve even been told I would never be able to find someone if I continue to do anything that may be considered such a manly vocation.

I admit that these comments used to bother me. While a part of me knew they were false and I knew they shouldn’t get to me, they did. Every year I wondered why I enjoyed gaming and I even started to think maybe I am just being attention seeking? Who cares that I’ve been playing computer games since I was a girl. It was obviously something I did for some silly reason and simply not because of pure enjoyment. I even quit gaming for three years – it was torture.

So like usual, when this birthday came around I found myself once again having my deep soul searching assignment as to whether or not I should give up gaming.

I like to think that this year I am a little older and wiser and maybe that’s why I realised I don’t care anymore. I game because I want to, I game because I enjoy it and I love writing about gaming, talking about gaming and being a gamer.

While sure, it may not seem the most awesome life and while it may seem like I am wasting it staying home on a Friday night with a beer and my favourite MMO, I say waste away!

I can’t change how other people feel, what they choose to believe and even stop them from spreading it around, but I can decide if I am going to listen and if I am going to let them get to me. So, I am going to decide to not do that.

If there is one thing I would tell my younger self right now, it would be to never stop gaming no matter what other people might think. If they have a problem with your gaming then it’s their problem, not yours.

So boot up your computer, start a new game and let’s go save a princess together.

To gaming for life!

WoW Pet Fundraiser for Superstorm Sandy

WoW Pet FundraiserI love a good charity fundraiser using virtual goods, and no-one does it better than Blizzard with their WoW Pet Fundraisers. They’ve announced that in coming weeks there will be the option to purchase an in-game pet called a Cinder Kitten.

It’ll cost you US $10 and 100% of proceeds will go to supporting – once the full details are posted we’ll let you know. The initiative should raise a few million dollars – I know I’ll be buying one. I just wish more companies did this more often, particularly for disasters that are less well reported than this one has been.

Over to you: will you be buying a Cinder Kitten?

Guild Wars 2 Free Trial Info

Guild Wars 2 Free Trial InfoArenaNet have announced that they’ll be running a Guild Wars 2 free trial for friends of current players, between the 15th and 18th November. The details:

We want you to experience Guild Wars 2 and Lost Shores with your friends, so on Monday November 12, we will turn on Refer a Friend Free Trial. You will be able to invite up to 3 Friends to play Guild Wars 2 with you for free from November 15-18.

To do so, you need a Guild Wars 2 account in good standing that was created before 23:59 PST (7:59 GMT) on November 6.

We will give you more details once the program goes live, but start thinking about who you want to invite!

I’d imagine this will be a fairly successful campaign given the momentum Guild Wars 2 has built up: what do you think?

BioWare On SWTOR Oceanic Servers: Wait and See Approach

SWTOR Oceanic ServersSWTOR’s Executive Producer, Jeff Hickman, has provided a little more information on the issue of low oceanic server populations. It’s nothing surprising though – BioWare are going to wait and see if sending SWTOR Free to Play increases oceanic server populations:

We are very aware of the concerns with the population levels on the Oceanic servers. The problem is pretty complex, as the solutions we have either split the populations further (like allowing Oceanic players to move to North American servers), or would force players to go to server types (PvP or RP, etc…) that they do not want to be on. Our current plan is to wait for Free-to-Play to launch and see what the influx of new players does to the populations of these servers. We will give it a little time and if we do not see significant improvement, then we will move ahead with the solution that offers the best playing experience for the Oceanic community.

If things do end up requiring a solution, it’ll be interesting to see what it is given Hickman says that forcing a migration or move to a different server aren’t ideal.

What’s your thoughts?

Darkfall: Unholy Wars – What Is It?

We’re pleased to have one our of readers, Dylan Underhill, write a guest post on Dark Fall: Unholy Walls. He’s part of the Harlequin guild – thanks Dylan! If you’d like to share your thoughts on an MMO you’re passionate about, drop us a line!

Darkfall: Unholy Wars is an open world MMO.  No rules, no theme park – it’s a single instance world, everyone shares it. Total sandbox.  There is no targeting system other than you aim and you kill.  It is a game of jerks, circle jerking and jerkwads.  Oh, forgot to mention – it’s full loot PvP with siege weaponry and big toys.

Darkfall: Unholy Wars

This isn’t a game for carebears.  Strange things happen to these wonderful creatures in Darkfall.  Scientist from all over the globe have come together to deduce how Darkfall differs from other games. They were able to come up with this simple formula for the layman:

Full loot PVP Sandbox you say?

That’s right adventurer!  For those of you who are unfamiliar with the concept of a ‘sandbox’ MMO, a sandbox MMO is your typical MMO, but lacking a rigid structure.  Sure there are tools available to you, but at the end of the day you can do anything within the parameters of the game.  City building, raiding, mercenary work, city sieges, ship sieges, trading / merchanting – they’re all viable ways of playing the game. If you have the will, you could most probably accomplish it. The catch is, this isn’t a game that is easy to play solo.   Sure you can live your life on the sidelines or in the small scale, raiding, plunderering and pillaging at will, however, it takes a guild to build a city, an alliance of stout comrades to defend it and the resources, wit and ability to take one.

The rewards for taking a city in a game such as this, besides all the wonderful loot and plunder, along with the land, are the associated reputation and the fight. There is a certain satisfaction to be gained from this game as demonstrated by this infographic:

My mum told me this game had a grind

Your mother is a classy lady.  If she were talking about the original Darkfall, she would be 100% correct.  Aventurine has taken Unholy Wars in a direction similar to EVE Online.  They have a role system, which unlike its predecessor where you can level every skill and use them all at once (which led to people being almost required to level so many skills to be competitive).  In Unholy Wars, you can choose a role, which gives you the ability to use any of the available skills to that role.  These skills still require levelling, but there is not nearly as much required to max out a role versus its predecessor.

Furthermore, you can (almost – a limiting system is in place to stop it happening too frequently) freely swap between roles, so if you ever get bored of being a warrior and caving in skulls, swap it up and wear some robes for a bit.

TL;DR (typical!)

Being a heavily involved sandbox game, Darkfall is a great opportunity to join or create a tight-knit clan/community. The PvP players rely on the crafters, the crafters rely on the PvE players for materials, and the PvP players for protection, and the PvE players rely on the friendly PvP players for protection. It can certainly be played solo, but it will make life difficult..

It is also a great opportunity to get involved with other communities/clans via world politics. Meta Gaming is a huge aspect. You can become powerful through war, through the political propaganda machine, or through economic superiority. The choice is yours!

Star Wars Episode 7 Trailer (Sort Of)

Could this be an inkling of what’s to come in Star Wars Episode 7?

Actually, I’m pretty optimistic that the new films will be good, but the video was good for a Friday night laugh don’t you think?

SWTOR Meet The Developer: Hall Hood

BioWare have posted one of their semi-regular ‘Meet The Developers’ blog posts. This time it’s SWTOR’s Lead Writer, Hall Hood, who’s under the spotlight.

The Q&A is a long way off forensic given BioWare is asking the questions but it’s interesting in its own way.

Plus, there’s a spin-off forum thread has been created for follow-up questions.

Check it out for yourself
