About David

David Holloway has been involved with gaming since the early 1970′s and with virtual worlds since heavy use of a MOO in 1993 – he even admits to having owned a Vic 20 and used it heavily to play cassette-based roleplaying games. As far as Star Wars goes, he still owns his original set of Star Wars figures and can vouch for the fact that a 1978 Stormtrooper can be blown to bits by shooting it with a slug gun from a distance. He’s also played Star Wars games as far back as the Super Nintendo console and to this day is devastated by the accidental erasure of all his progress on Lego Star Wars on the Wii.

Research: FPS Gamers Have Less Brain Grey Matter

call-of-duty-ghosts-pc-screenshot-3840x2160-004Damn those scientists, especially those Canadian ones. A study released today has found that players of action video games (defined in the study as first or third person shooters), tended to rely on habit (response learning) when playing.

The problem is, that type of learning has been shown to be related to decreased grey matter in the hippocampus area of the brain. Why is that an issue? Well, decreased grey matter in that area is linked to a higher incidence of neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Here’s the research abstract:

When navigating, distinct strategies rely on either the hippocampus or the striatum. We investigated whether action-video game playing is also associated with increased use of response learning strategies during navigation. We found that actionVGPs had a significantly higher likelihood of using a response learning strategy (80.76%) compared to nonVGPs (42.42%). Using response strategies is associated with decreased grey matter in the hippocampus. Previous studies have shown that decreased volume in the hippocampus is associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders. If actionVGPs have lower grey matter in the hippocampus, these individuals could be at increased risk of developing neurological disorders.

So all you FPS’ers out there, maybe it’s time to broaden your gaming horizons?

Reaping The Whirlwind Released

Here at The Oceanic Gamer we’re unadulterated fans of The Secret World, and today’s announcement of the Season 1 Finale hasn’t given us any reason to change that view. Check the trailer out and then the press release of what you can expect in Reaping The Whirlwind, which is live now (assuming you’ve already got the issue #9 and #10 content updates):

Oslo, Norway – May 6th, 2015 – The Secret World® has just gotten a major content and story update with Issue #11: Reaping the Whirlwind. The game’s deep, dark and unique story has been told from launch and through eleven content updates, and now the first season finale is here!

The players fight their way through the Orochi tower, challenge eternal beings, grasp the ultimate power and will finally reap the consequences of their choices. Everything so far has been building up to this story climax, but it is of course not the end – it is merely the end of the beginning.

Issue #11: Reaping the Whirlwind offers hours of new content as the players can explore twenty-one unique levels of the Orochi tower in Tokyo, as they challenge the world’s largest corporation and its powerful CEO. The players will be rewarded with an Ultimate Ability based on their choices in the main story since launch. They also get a taste of what is to come, and learn that defying eternal beings comes at a heavy price.

Here’s some screen shots from the update:

Star Wars Battlefront: Trailer and Release Date

EA have announced some details about the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront game. November 19th is the Australian release date, with New Zealanders getting it on the 20th. The game will be available for PS4, Xbox One and PC via the EA Origin Service.

Does it look good? Have a look for yourself:

Not surprisingly, there’s a very direct tie-in with this December’s new Star Wars movie:

Fans who pre-order Star Wars Battlefront will be among the first players to experience the Battle of Jakku*, the pivotal moment when the New Republic confronted key Imperial holdouts on a remote desert planet on the Outer Rim. Taking place in the aftermath of the Rebel victory in the Battle of Endor, players will experience the events that created the massive, battle-scarred landscape of Jakku shown in Star Wars™: The Force Awakens™. Players who pre-order Star Wars Battlefront can fight the battle one-week early starting on December 1, 2015. All other players will get access to this free† content on December 8, 2015.

And there’s all the usual suspect planets as well for you to have a look around:

Star Wars Battlefront will allow fans to live out a wide range of heroic moments and intense battle fantasies of their own – firing blasters, riding speeder bikes and snow speeders, commanding AT-ATs and piloting TIE fighters and the Millennium Falcon. These battles will take place on some of the most iconic planets in the Star Wars universe, including Endor, Hoth, Tatooine and the previously unexplored planet, Sullust. Gamers will be able to play as some of the most memorable characters in the original trilogy such as Darth Vader and Boba Fett. Star Wars Battlefront will feature a wide range of modes tailored for different types of battles, from larger 40-person competitive multiplayer to crafted missions that are played solo, with a friend via split-screen offline or co-operatively online.

And finally, some screen shots from the game:

There’s an official site for the game if you want to get ongoing updates, but be assured we’ll let you know when we hear more as well.
