Guild Wars 2 Free Trial Info

Guild Wars 2 Free Trial InfoArenaNet have announced that they’ll be running a Guild Wars 2 free trial for friends of current players, between the 15th and 18th November. The details:

We want you to experience Guild Wars 2 and Lost Shores with your friends, so on Monday November 12, we will turn on Refer a Friend Free Trial. You will be able to invite up to 3 Friends to play Guild Wars 2 with you for free from November 15-18.

To do so, you need a Guild Wars 2 account in good standing that was created before 23:59 PST (7:59 GMT) on November 6.

We will give you more details once the program goes live, but start thinking about who you want to invite!

I’d imagine this will be a fairly successful campaign given the momentum Guild Wars 2 has built up: what do you think?

BioWare On SWTOR Oceanic Servers: Wait and See Approach

SWTOR Oceanic ServersSWTOR’s Executive Producer, Jeff Hickman, has provided a little more information on the issue of low oceanic server populations. It’s nothing surprising though – BioWare are going to wait and see if sending SWTOR Free to Play increases oceanic server populations:

We are very aware of the concerns with the population levels on the Oceanic servers. The problem is pretty complex, as the solutions we have either split the populations further (like allowing Oceanic players to move to North American servers), or would force players to go to server types (PvP or RP, etc…) that they do not want to be on. Our current plan is to wait for Free-to-Play to launch and see what the influx of new players does to the populations of these servers. We will give it a little time and if we do not see significant improvement, then we will move ahead with the solution that offers the best playing experience for the Oceanic community.

If things do end up requiring a solution, it’ll be interesting to see what it is given Hickman says that forcing a migration or move to a different server aren’t ideal.

What’s your thoughts?

Star Wars Episode 7 Trailer (Sort Of)

Could this be an inkling of what’s to come in Star Wars Episode 7?

Actually, I’m pretty optimistic that the new films will be good, but the video was good for a Friday night laugh don’t you think?

SWTOR Meet The Developer: Hall Hood

BioWare have posted one of their semi-regular ‘Meet The Developers’ blog posts. This time it’s SWTOR’s Lead Writer, Hall Hood, who’s under the spotlight.

The Q&A is a long way off forensic given BioWare is asking the questions but it’s interesting in its own way.

Plus, there’s a spin-off forum thread has been created for follow-up questions.

SWTOR Servers Down: Is It Sandy?

UPDATE 7: 10.10pm AEDT – The SWTOR website is up and reports of people being able to get back in game. No word from BioWare on what went wrong.

UPDATE 6: 9.40pm – the official SWTOR Twitter account has finally confirmed the issue:

We are aware some players can’t access bit.ly/SuYweu and experience login issues. We are working on resolving it as soon as possible.

UPDATE 5: 9.31pm AEDT – Thanks to Ken posting in comments:

Just called Customer service. They are aware of a problem, but they have received no info from their higher ups. They also werent aware that the call center they routed calls to for “technical” service is down as well.

UPDATE 4: 9.15pm AEDT – Well over 2 hours since the outage and no official acknowledgement.

UPDATE 3: 8.45pm AEDT – No acknowledgement from BioWare as yet.

UPDATE 2: 8.20pm AEDT – multiple confirmations that people who were logged in at time of the issue are still able to play. Also confirmation from numerous players in US and EU of issues. No confirmation from BioWare at this stage.

UPDATE: 8.00pm AEDT- Other EA sites appear to be working but reports from EU and some US players say they can’t access the game or site either.

This evening local players have found they can’t access the SWTOR patcher or SWTOR.com. Reports started coming in around 7pm AEDT and things are still not up and running. There’s no confirmation at all on the issue but one suggestion is it’s ex-Hurricane Sandy impacting things US-side.

Are you able to log in or were you lucky enough to be in-game and are still there? Let us know in comments. We’ll update here all evening as we find out more or things change.

Official Response on Future of Star Wars Movies

Unless you’ve been living in a box the past 24 hours, you’ll have heard that Disney will be the proud owners of Lucasfilm. It’s huge news, particularly given that Disney have said there’ll be more Star Wars movies. That’s set conversations running all over the place on what the future movies will be.

Well now, you can hear it straight from the horse’s mouth. George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy have sat down with StarWars.com to give an official response on the future of Star Wars movies. It’s only 3 minutes long but it makes the whole thing seem a lot more real. Check it out:

Aside from being excited that there are more movies, I’m more pumped about the fact that it won’t be just limited to another three – George Lucas says there’s a bunch of other stuff there ready to be worked up as well.

Now over to you: do you think Kennedy and Disney can pull off movies that kick some serious butt? Or will we end up with Jar Jar Binks: Gungan Explorer?

The Naked Gamer: Why I Play The Secret World

Why I Play The Secret World

The Naked Gamer is a regular opinion column that strips back the superficialities and looks at the flesh underneath. If you’ve got a topic you’d like discussed, drop columnist Kristy Green a line!

It’s no secret that I enjoy playing The Secret World and I would like to spend this week talking about why. This isn’t a review, I am not trying to be objective or discuss the finer points like what’s good and what isn’t. This is just simply why I love playing this game.

There is nothing I enjoy more in an evening than playing The Secret World with my lights turned down and my speakers turned up. I log in, sit back and let myself be absorbed into the world.

It doesn’t have the best graphics currently around but it does have something far better, and that is atmosphere. I adore the contrast of light and dark –  it’s spooky and the sound effects are superb. It’s actually the only MMO that I play with the sound on. I like having the music set just loud enough to be classed as background noise and running around Kingsmouth hearing all the groans and growls. It is heart in the throat type stuff, I just love it.

I wouldn’t say I am big on role-playing, but I do enjoy creating characters and playing them with a style that suits my little back story of them. Now that I am absorbed into the game, The Secret World allows me to be absorbed into my character. Outfits aren’t designated by gear or costumes – you can wear whatever you want.  My only disappointment is that the female clothes aren’t at all interesting and I don’t really like them. I only hope they design more outfits that suit all fashion tastes instead of the more obvious choices.

Another thing that helps me stay captivated is that we aren’t given a voice. I know it’s been some people’s biggest complaint but there is nothing more cringeworthy than creating your amazing character and then having the game assign them a voice that just doesn’t match. It’s painful having to play through a whole game and cut scenes with a voice that makes just makes you want to shudder.

Speaking of cut scenes, I really enjoy watching them in The Secret World. They use this time to really let the other character’s personalities come through. There is no talking heads or limited movement during these video breaks. Instead, characters use full body language, they move around, they stop and pause; they think and feel and they allow their individuality to shine.

Then there are the investigation missions that can only be completed by figuring out all the clues. The world is slowly opened up and you will discover that not everything is as it seems. The Secret World is filled with secrets that only make me want to play the game more so that I can learn. Oh and the twists! But I won’t tell you about any of those.

All of these things come together to really give you a living, breathing world. When playing The Secret World, I can’t help but be pulled in. If you let yourself go and just fall into the game then you are in for one awesome ride. It’s really intense, fun, challenging and scary. It will have you thinking, wondering, and pondering about everything you see and everyone you meet.

The Secret World isn’t perfect but it’s an experience and one I am glad to have never missed.

(Editor’s note: As you know I’ve raved on about TSW endlessly too – are you seeing a trend here? This is a very immersive game – why not give it a try? And no – I’m not being paid by Funcom)
