Oceanic Guild Spotlight: Kangaroos With Frickin Lightsabers (KWFL)

If you’d like your guild spotlighted, just use our contact form to let us know. Or if you like, respond to the questions shown below and send them in – we love to profile guilds and the work they’re doing.

The only requirement is that you’re an active oceanic guild. Please be patient if you don’t hear back from us immediately – we will only be spotlighting a guild every week or so.

History of your guild’s name

Originally we were known as Kangaroos with Frickin Lazerbeams as a corp in Eve Online. If anyone has played it they will probably have heard of us at one point or another. We participated in two annual alliance tournaments there and had lots of fun. A lot of us are looking for something fresh and it seemed only fitting to change it from Lazerbeams to Lightsabers.

What sort of guild do you intend on being?

We are pretty casual but are keen on end game content, PvP and mainly just like having a laugh. We all enjoy our beer so there’s plenty of good times on Teamspeak. We have been known to occasionally crack out the old rhythm augmentation droid and spontaneously break into all out raving.

Why did you choose to be a part of the Empire?

Being evil is loads of fun. Down to the little things like the interrogation droid pet, the dark side is just plain better!

You have one minute to convince someone they should be in your guild – what would you say to them?

If you’re keen to chill on TS and play with a casual bunch of guys, then this would be for you. We would love to have some more diversity and more classes in the guild and we’re always happy to help newer players with class missions and leveling that can otherwise get a little frustrating.

What are your predictions for the first 6 months of the guild’s existence post-launch?

We don’t really have any specific aims in the Guild as of yet other than hit lvl 50 and smash out some hard dungeons and whatnot. Definately some PvP is gonna happen as well, we are all keen as mustard for that. And if we get enough people we would love to start an in-guild PvP tournament with some good old 2v2’s and 4v4’s.

Machinima: Sith Marauder PvP

One of the things I’ve most been looking forward to with the launch of SWTOR, is the coming torrent of machinima from the game. That includes some good overviews of gameplay, and one such example comes from Oceanic player Klinda, who’s put some of his better moments as a PvP’ing Sith Marauder to some music and produced this:

I’m pretty sure I’ve been killed a number of times by damn Sith Maurauders but it’s fun viewing anyway. If you’ve got your own machinima you’d like to share, post it in comments!

SWTOR coming for Mac: coming ‘soon’

Joystiq have a quick snippet of a quote from Bioware’s co-founders on the issue of playing SWTOR on a Mac.

Ray Muzyka:

We’ve done a lot of Mac ports before of our games. We haven’t announced any details yet for The Old Republic, but we know that’s an important and large audience.

Greg Zeschuk:

That’s definitely one of the things we’re looking at next. We want to get this launch under our belt and everything stabilized and happy, and then we’ll look at other platforms, and that’s obviously one of the first ones

There’s not a lot of concrete stuff in there but it’s a hell of a step forward from Bioware’s position to date and will bring some joy to those not willing to run the game on a Boot Camp partition (which for the record works beautifully for me).

Over to you: looking forward to a Mac port of the game?

Thanks to Gail for the heads-up!

The Tea-Sipping Jedi

Just a random plug for a t-shirt I stumbled across today. I like a more subtle Star Wars vibe and this t-shirt fits that bill nicely (click on the pic for the full-size version):

I still probably love my NZ Sith T-Shirt more though.

Feel free to link to other cool Star Wars T-Shirts you’ve seen. Any SWTOR ones on the market yet?

Unconfirmed Oceanic First: 4/5 cleared Eternity Vault Hard Mode

Those dynamos over at Remnants have continued their progress from a full normal mode Eternity Vault clear a few days back:

Remnants ventured into Eternity Vault Hard Mode last night for the first time, which is a significant step up from the Normal Mode. After coming off the high that they experienced from being Oceanic first by dropping 5/5 bosses in Normal Mode, they have now pushed through to carry out Oceanic first kills in the Hard Mode of Eternity Vault, downing 4/5 bosses!

All that is left is “Soa – The Infernal One”, who doesn’t stand a chance with this team beating down the door!

The team: Narboon, Korbainethor, Krelliath, Klinda, Chair, Elgordomedico, Cheewy, Skandus

Here’s one of the pics (click on it for the full goodness):

Sounds like the full clear is imminent. As always, we’re keen to hear from other guilds who are doing well in either early or end content to let us know and we’ll plug your progress!

SWTOR gaming rig: what a beauty!

I had to share this nice looking gaming rig from Peter, who’s a member of the SWTOR Gamers of Oceania Group.

Click on the pic for the full size version:

It’s everything I love: minimalist, effective and damn pretty. For those interested Peter is using the Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard and uses the traditional computer monitor for Ventrilo, maps and other game info. I think it’s pretty obvious what the big screen is used for! I’m pretty sure however that the glass of wine is optional, although some will vehemently disagree with that.

If you’re proud of your rig, drop us a line and let us know and we’ll feature it.

SWTOR: Full of Gungans!

Nothing in the Star Wars Universe draws more derision than Jar Jar Binks and his brethren, the Gungans.

SWTOR thankfully doesn’t feature the race, but it’s part of a comic called ‘The Dangers of a Star Wars MMO’ and you and check it out right here.

For what it’s worth, I think they’ve captured the nature of George Lucas perfectly!

Heavy Damage: Jedi Guardian overview

It’s a week of column launches and the next cab off the rank is Heavy Damage, devoted to everything tanking. Our own Alec Bailey will bring you tips. guides and strategies for what’s arguably one of the hardest roles in any Operation. First up, and overview of the Jedi Guardian.

Hi folks, it’s your resident tank expert, Alec. And I don’t mean those big metal war machines with a howitzer and tracks, I mean a MMO tank. Tanks come in several varieties and flavors. Such as: melee tanks, ranged tanks, mitigation tanks, and avoidance tanks.

Star Wars: The Old Republic has three paths a tank can pick from. First there is Jedi Guardian, a traditional melee tank relying on mitigation from heavy armor and shield generators. Next we have the Trooper Vanguard which is a ranged mitigation tank wearing heavy armor and using shield generators. The third choice is the Jedi Shadow, a melee and semi-ranged, force-using tank that wears light armor and shield generators. Most people who know anything about tanking would look at the Shadow and think that it was a avoidance tank. It’s not. It’s also a mitigation tank using “Techniques” or “Stances” to raise its armor rating to be on par with the Trooper and Guardian.

Today I will be going into detail on the Jedi Knight’s tanking advanced class, the Guardian, talking about what to expect and even a little theory-crafting on some builds I’ve made, and some made by fellow tanks.

The Jedi Knight will start his journey on Tython as a damage dealer. All early characters( pre-advanced class) will be damage dealers. At level 10 or when you complete your starter world storyline, you will have the chance to go to the Republic Fleet. This is the place where you pick your advanced class. Now that you’re a Guardian you’re going to need to get some heavy armor and a shield generator. Heavy armor can be bought at vendors on the Republic Fleet or on the Galactic Market. Your first shield generator you’ll get for free when you pick the Guardian AC.

Tanking with a Guardian is fun and a bit challenging. They have a lot of abilities you will use, so get used to a full quickbar. After you have your advanced class, you’ll be able to put points into three trees, or paths that a Guardian can take. The three trees are Defense, Focus, and Vigilance. Now don’t let the names fool you – Defense is the tank tree, but Vigilance has a lot of great tanking abilities and bonuses.

Jedi Guardians use “Focus” to fuel or use their abilities. Some abilities use focus, some grant focus, and a few are free (meaning they use no focus). For example, Sundering Strike can be upgraded to have a 100% chance to build one focus as well as lowering the target’s armor five percent. It can be stacked up to five times making it a great ability to build focus and debuff an enemy. Sundering Strike can also be upgraded to apply the sunder debuff twice per activation, furthering it’s usefulness.

The build that I am currently leveling on my Guardian was created by SWTOR forum member Seraphimm. Seraphimm’s build is very close to what I had already planned on rolling but, with more talents in the Vigilance tree than I originally planned, so far it is working out great. Here’s a link to the build.

His build has more points in the Vigilance tree than the Defense tree. If you read the abilities and perks the Vigilance tree is excellent for a Guardian path. Here’s the rotation  Serphimm listed in case you’re using his build or a similar one.

BELOW level 50
1- Pick one of the ranged Fighters and Force leap to him, hit him with Blade storm.
2- Issue a challenging Call (15meter range).
3- Drag the melee you picked up over to the other group who are also focused on you (Challenging call either reaches them or they are outside agro range and they aren’t an issue anyway)
4- Once you have the melee over by the other ranged mob Drop your Force Sweep (You have now hit everyone before your challenging call wears off.)
5- Begin sundering strikes and ripostes as cool downs allow. You only have to hold threat for 24 seconds before your Challenging Call is available again.
6- Use Force Push to knock primary target away, use Challenging call and force leap to the mob you just knocked away.

After level 50
1- Pick one of the ranged fighters and force leap to him.
2- Issue a Challenging Call
3- Drag the melee over to the other ranged mob
4- Drop your Force sweep and macro target your healer/dps
5- Guardian Leap to said healer/dps then immediately Force Leap back to the group you created (You will now have protector and Unremitting on you for 3 seconds)
6- Begin your sundering strikes/ripostes as available
7- As soon as Challenging call is available, use it then Guardian Leap Back to Healer/dps then immediately Force Leap back to the Pack and drop Force Sweep.”

SWTOR Suggestion Box: Space Combat

Welcome to one of our new weekly columns, SWTOR Suggestion Box. This is essentially your forum to comment on things you’d like to see in SWTOR. Whether it’s improvements or brand new features, this is the place to put your view. It’ll appear each weekend as a conversation starter between long periods of actually playing the game!

I thought I’d start off this week with a topic that’s been contentious since it was announced: space combat. What I’m interested in is: what would you like to see changed with space combat, and do you see space combat as central to SWTOR as an MMO?

Over to you!

‘Doctor Who: Worlds In Time’ MMO now open

Sick of playing SWTOR? No, me neither, but if you want something a little different, jump in the TARDIS:

“If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be the Doctor’s companion, then wonder no longer as you can now undergo the experience yourself… at least digitally. ‘Doctor Who: Worlds in Time’ is a new MMO game from BBC Worldwide Digital Entertainment and Games and Three Rings Design which allows players around the world to enter the TARDIS and follow in the footsteps of the famous Time Lord while defending the universe from destruction.

The online game just went public yesterday and is still in the beta phase so expect a few changes along the way while in the preview period. Players can choose from four different races then personalize their avatar by choosing such attributes as hair color, skin color and facial features. Once you create an account, you can enter the TARDIS and join the Doctor.”
