First Oceanic clear of Eternity Vault? [Updated]

I had Insurgent from Oceanic guild Remnants drop me a line with an interesting tidbit:

Remnants have now cleared all 5 bosses in Normal 8 man Eternity Vault. Just letting you know, we believe it may be an Oceanic first, but this is not confirmed.

Even if it’s not an Oceanic guild first, it’s still quite an achievement. You can see our previous spotlight on Remnants here.

We’ve asked for some pics of the run, so watch this space. Any other guilds out there who’ve achieved the same, post your claim in comments!

UPDATE: You can view the announcement from Remnants on their website.

Here’s the key details:

The team plugged hard at it all night. With a wipe at 2012 HP left on Soa, lots might have decided to call it a night, but not this team. This team didn’t, and at midnight (that’s 12:00AM GMT +11, for those wanting to play the “what time is it there” game) Soa was finally killed.

The team: Narboon, Korbainethor, Krelliath, Skandus, Chair, Hannarr, Hairspray, Elgordomenico.

A special mention goes to Xaem for sitting out to allow for the progression.

Here’s a pic from the final kill of Soa – The Infernal One (click on image for the full size):

Over to you: are you surprised how quick some of these things are being achieved?

Star Wars Shuffling for New Year’s Eve

It’s coming up to New Year’s Eve, so what better than seeing some SWTOR dancing to one of the year’s biggest hits. It’s not going to win any machinima awards but it’s a bit of fun so enjoy it for what it is:

SWTOR Roleplaying: an introduction

If you’re into RP and are thinking of going the whole hog in SWTOR, then read this great overview of RP by SWTOR-RP‘s head honcho, Ganden. He also happens to be an Oceanic player so it’s a double win – enjoy.

There are many types and styles of gameplay out there when it comes to MMORPGs. Players have their own preferences, whether it be a focus on PvP, PvE, or perhaps a mix of both. However, there is another style of gameplay that arguably holds the most passionate and opinionated player base, and that style is roleplay. To define roleplay in a nutshell, it consists of a player immersing him or herself behind a character with a story, a personality, and a way of life. The player then interacts with other players in the game from the perspective of their character, acting as their character would in the given situation. It can go as far as interacting with non-player characters and world objects in-character. In roleplay, there is a realm of possibilities when it comes to roleplaying – even more so when the game is in the setting of one of the largest and most popular fantasy worlds ever created – Star Wars.

The Old Republic is by far the largest Star Wars virtual universe ever created in a game, so you can only imagine the anticipation held by the ever-so-eager roleplayers. Star Wars: Galaxies was fun for roleplayers, but BioWare’s Star Wars virtual reality goes above and beyond anything ever created by Sony Online Entertainment. There are seventeen worlds to explore, eight unique classes to play, and two mega-factions which go head-to-head in a battle to establish their own ideas of peace for the known galaxy. And with a game so large, where does someone who wishes to pursue the idea of roleplay start? There are so many avenues to cover when developing your own character, and in this guide to roleplay, we’re going to hopefully assist you in some of the steps involved in kicking off your roleplaying endeavours, as well as covering some of the etiquette surrounding the controversial style of gameplay.

Before you begin your roleplaying adventures, you need to decide what kind of roleplayer you will be. Despite mixed views about whether there should be classifications of roleplay based on roleplaying intensity, two types of roleplay do exist in this modern age of gaming; light and heavy RP. This very topic could be talked about for hours, but we won’t bore you with all of the details. In short, light RP consists of roleplaying on occasion, with out-of-character (OOC) gameplay being the first priority. On the other hand, if you’re classified as a heavy roleplayer, then most of what you do in a game is done in-character. For a broader insight into these two types of roleplay, be sure to check out the edition of The Darker Side of Life – a weekly column at SWTOR-RP – which tackles this very topic.

Some roleplaying scenarios can leave in awe and wanting more - just like this guy

To roleplay, you must have a character with a background of sorts, but it’s up to you how much detail you want to develop before actually playing. Keep in mind that at some stage in roleplay, questions about your character’s background may come up in dialogue with other players. Unless you’re great at improvising, you may want to put some effort and detail into a back-story. But of course, you must start with the basics. Choosing your species and gender should be the foremost decisions, as your character’s name could be defined by species and gender. For example, a Chiss character’s name is going to be somewhat different than an Iridonian’s name. Once you’ve chosen your species and gender, choose an appropriate name. A little hint for roleplay and name creation: be original. You won’t be making many friends with names like Luke Skyhopper or Ben Solowalker. Do a little research into your chosen race and create a unique name using some of your favourite letters. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to play with your body! Well, not your own body. You get the point.

Physical attributes are just as important as name choice, as the appearance of your character may just influence the way he or she is perceived by other players. Largely built characters are going to come across as dominant, whilst the smaller and more petite ones may give off the impression to an irritating chihuahua. Maybe not quite as dramatic, but again, you get the point. Be sure, however, to consider your character’s base personality traits when creating your physical attributes. Consider age, height, weight, skin colour, eye colour, hair style and colour (if applicable), and facial markings and tattoos. Character creation should flow once you get started. It is always the initial process that hurts the brain, but once you get going, ideas should start popping into your head. For a guide on how character creation and player backgrounds work, take a look at the SWTOR-RP Wiki where you’ll find a diverse abundance of character biographies for The Old Republic.

Keep your private roleplay... private

Roleplay can sometimes bear a bit of baggage when it comes to etiquette. The basic rule of thumb is consent. If you’re about to do or say something that may affect another player in a significant way, make sure you have their consent. You don’t want to be emoting the movement of activating your lightsaber and severing another character’s arm at the shoulder socket if they’re not willing to lose that limb. “Ben Solowalker rushes in with his lightsaber and cuts off your arm!” Don’t do that. That would be most unfortunate. In addition to consent, don’t be playing the impervious and unbeatable character, especially in The Old Republic. BioWare created a story where they’ve made everyone the best of the best. Jedi, Smugglers, Sith, and Bounty Hunters are all going to be top of the class characters, so eventually you’re going to have to take one for the team. You win some and you lose some. This can always be decided with the roll of a die if you cannot decide via private messages as to who should come out as the victor. The die can help decide which character lands a blow in both actual duels in-game, as well as “emote duels.” Emoting a duel consists of using the /emote command and entering a description as to what your character is doing. Most roleplay tends to take the latter approach when it comes to duelling.

If you’re on a roleplay server in The Old Republic, never be afraid to engage in roleplay with an unknown character. You never know what might happen. Whether your dialogue turns into a cantina brawl or you end up making a new ally, there is a world of fun to be had. Roleplaying in The Old Republic takes you a few steps closer to experiencing the vividness that is the Star Wars universe. Almost anything is possible, and you control the action. And who better to control the action than a bunch of rowdy Aussies? That takes the anything is possible clause into a whole new world of madness!

For more of an insight into roleplay, be sure to head over to SWTOR-RP.com and check out some of the roleplaying resources we’ve made available to our target audience – roleplayers.

And that’s the way the cookie crumbles in roleplay.

Five Predictions for SWTOR in 2012

Many days were spent seeking confirmation from fellow Jedi on these 2012 predictions

It’s that time of the year again, where we look forward to the coming year and make prognostications about all sorts of stuff.

I thought I’d take the opportunity to make some predictions for SWTOR, for two reasons.

The first is to provoke some discussion as nothing gets a bunch of people fired up than arguing over semi-educated guesses.

The second reason is to give myself something to laugh about in a year’s time when it becomes obvious how wrong I was (as an example – look at my predictions for 2010).

So here we go, enjoy some wild conjecture based on nothing but my best guesses!

Expansion 1 will be announced

This prediction’s a bit of an easy one in that I’m sure planning is already underway. It’ll probably be the second half of the year when the announcement is made, and there’ll probably be a new race. A new class seems less likely though.

The 3-million player mark will be hit in the first half of 2012

This is the biggest risk I’m taking in that the number could be well under or well over that, though I doubt it. That said I’m fairly confident this watermark will be reached by July 2012, and then it’ll be a much slower growth trajectory from then on.

Sensationalist journalism will dig its teeth in

Around February/March expect the first run of stories on people claiming SWTOR has taken over their lives / eaten their children / forced their spouse to taser them to stop playing the game.

Plans for a TOR movie will be announced

Either based on one of the novels i.e. Revan, or key story lines in the game, there’ll be at the very least hints thrown out by LucasArts or even Bioware/EA on movie plans. With or without Justin Bieber as Revan.

Australia / New Zealand launch

I have to throw in a local prediction here. The launch events will be in March in Sydney and Auckland as the respective largest cities in each country. One of the Bioware ‘Doctors’ will come for the launch, along with whichever community rep and/or developer that wins the lottery for the working holiday Down Under. There will be no flash mobs in full Star Wars kit riding kangaroos and kiwis. Well definitely no kiwis, as that’d be cruel.

The Wrap

The above five predictions are about as close I can get to thinking outside the square. As always, would love to know about your predictions for the coming year. Please post them in comments and then we can all come back next December for some reminiscences in between playing the new Wookiee Nights expansion.

SWTOR hits one million subscribers in under a week

Less than a week since launch, and SWTOR has already broken a million registered players. Bioware co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk have posted a thank you note on the milestone whilst also acknowledging the queue issues on some servers.

A million subscribers is a mighty fine start, and as is stated in the post the growth is continuing. The real test as always will be in around 3 months to see if the current subscriber base is being maintained, how much growth is still occurring and how much churn in subscribers there is. All that said, it’d be hard to imagine Bioware are disappointed with the number of subscribers in such a short time.

What about you – does the number of subscribers have any impact on you beside server load?

New Flashpoint and expanded Karagga’s Palace Operation announced

Talk about not resting on one’s laurels. Bioware’s James Ohlen has provided a sneak peek on some new content launching next month.

Not much is being given away about either but here’s Ohlen’s teaser:

Next month we’re going to be releasing a new Flashpoint and an expanded Operation. The new Flashpoint involves a plague that could have significant repercussions across the galaxy. It takes place on a brand new world and involves some pretty epic battles. I can’t go into much detail, but be prepared for something different. The expanded Operation takes the existing Karagga’s palace scenario and more than triples it in size. It includes three new boss monsters and some pretty epic set pieces.

The last boss of the Karagga Operation is pictured in this post. I haven’t checked out any of the current Operations yet, so talk about me needing to play catch-up!

On the SWTOR forums, there’s already some debate over releasing new content versus fixing bugs in current content. Stephen Reid has responded on that as well:

And so begins the eternal MMO battle between ‘more new stuff’ and ‘fix the bugs’.

The development team is large enough that essentially, we can do both. We have many people working on analysing, triaging, fixing, testing and deploying new fixes to ensure the game’s stability – and we also have many other developers expanding the game and creating new content.

How about you – are you keen on new content already?

SWTOR might have been a Game of Thrones MMO

PC Gamer has an interesting interview with Bioware’s James Ohlen on the early discussions at Bioware around developing an MMO.

I’d always thought it would have been a little like the United Nations meeting for the first time, but apparently it was a core of three people. And according to Ohlen, those three tossed around ideas, including options if the Star Wars franchise wasn’t used:

“We had backup plans,” said Ohlen. “In all the design team was like three of us at that point, in total. So we were looking at doing a Lord of the Rings MMO, a Silmarillion MMO, a kind of a Gunslinger-esque Dark Tower MMO, a Game of Thrones MMO.”

Now, is it too much to ask for Bioware to develop all of those options – I mean how hard could it be? I’m not 100% sure on the Dark Tower option, but I’d definitely play the other three. A LOTRO competitor would have thrown in one hell of a competition dynamic into the MMO field, that’s for sure.

Over to you: if it wasn’t Star Wars, what lore-base should Bioware have used? Any commenters suggesting a Gilligan’s Island or Twilight MMO will be banned – but I’d back a Happy Days game.

Star Wars: The Old Republic – basic gameplay answers

This post is designed for the SWTOR player (like me) that needs to jump in and play without necessarily reading all the tutorials.

On levelling up my first beta toon (a Sith Inquisitor) and then my primary toon (a Jedi Consular), I struggled to find answers to a few things – not because the answers weren’t there, but because I didn’t have a lot of time to look.

So without further ado, here’s some key things that’ll make your playing experience more fun. This post will be updated as I progress through the game. I’ve only added things that really took me some time to work out to the point I was asking in guild or general chat.

Interface

1. How do I toggle between full screen and windowed mode? – Press Alt-Enter
2. How do I set auto loot? – Press Escape > Preferences > General > Select ‘Auto-Loot on Right CLick’
3. How do I change my Key Bindings? – Press Escape > Preferences > Select Key Bindings Tab at bottom left of the window
4. Does SWTOR have an auction house to sell gear? – Yes, it’s called the Galactic Trade Network, and there are kiosks in game that allow you to browse goods for sale and sell your own
5. How do I use my speeder after I’ve bought it? – Right click on it in inventory and it’ll grant you access. Then go to your abilities window, select the ‘vehicles’ tab and drag the vehicle you purchased to your action bar.
6. Can I talk to my companions on my ship? – Yes, you can’t summon them but they have their own quarters on the ship – go find em!

Gameplay

1. How do I find my class trainer? – Press ‘M’ to bring up the large map then on the bottm left select ‘Trainer’ and it’ll show where they are (assuming they’re in the area you currently are)
2. How do I compare the stats of an item with my companion’s item? – Go to Preferences > User Interface > Tool Tips > ‘Enable Companion Comparative Tooltips’
3. I’ve selected a quest reward but my inventory is full, how do I go back to get the reward? – You’ll see a flashing message in the very top right of your window – click on that and there’s your reward!
4. How do I get my Speeder Training Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3? – Your class trainer.

Random Quest Stuff – Republic

1. Taris, Prized Possessions Quest, where are the Nadu Seeds? – at -1053, 409 (in the shed with the bull dozers – it looks like a big hay bale)

2. Where is the Dynamet General Hospital Research Level? – it’s on the lowest level – go outside to -448, -168 and you’ll see the entrance.

3. Burnoff Quest, where are the toxic stockpiles? – ignore the green vats of sludge, what you’re looking for is the blue pots further into the Chemworks Factory. Just right click on one of them and they’ll be destroyed.

4. Missing Link Quest, where do I find the Rakghoul Camera? – You just need to kill one of the Rakghouls at the south of the Forward Research Camp and eventually the camera will drop.

5. Double Negative Quest, how do I get to the quarantine zone at the top right? – Work your way to the bottom left section on the map, then go to 2302,-3345 and there’s a little entrance that gets you there.

6. The Hunted Quest, where is the Public Holoterminal in Anchorhead? – it’s north east of where the map highlights, at 2154,434

7. A Time To Reflect Quest, what do I do when I get to the Republic Fleet? – I made the mistake of using my emergency fleet pass. You need to travel in your ship then the log will update to show you need to talk to Master Shanji-vru.

8. Fertilizer: Save The Fields Quest, how do I collect the soil samples? – You just go to the soil patches with the green gas rising off them. In your mission inventory you’ll see a sampling tool – use that and you’ll collect the sample. Clicking on the empty vial will do nothing.

9. Questionable Sources Quest, where is the Chiss defector? – He’s the frozen body being examined by a Cryo Commando just south of the mini-map marker.

10. Shattering, how do I disable the forcefield? – Use the console after killing the big robot. Wait for the little maintenance robot to go to each of the consoles around the room and once it’s in the middle of the force-field, use the item in your mission inventory on the maintenance robot and you can then open the door.

11. Green Battleground, how do I destroy the Imperial walkers? – This isn’t all obvious but you just need to mouse over main body of the walker at the top, right click and your toon will fire the rocket launcher in your quest inventory.

12. Operation: Overwatch, how do I use the drill scanner? – This is a painful oversight by BioWare in not instructing you how to use this. Go to your mission items in your inventory, right click the scanner, and once it launches, mouse up to the roof where the drill is and press AND HOLD the space bar and the scan will be taken.

13. Taking Back Talaos – Final Strike bonus: how do I get to the final Anti-Air Gun? – This is one of the stupidest things I’ve seen in the game, as you need to spend a long time roof hopping to get there. Here’s how: go to 3744,-169 and jump over the ledge onto the greenery/lattice, go straight ahead then left until you see another lattice ramping up. Make your way to around 3665, -439 and climb up onto that ledge then jump down onto the smaller ledge running perpendicular to the one you’re jumping off. You’ll now see the wrecked ship above you. Go to 3619,-174 and your binoculars will work – look up and to the right and you’ll be able to target the anti-air gun.

SWTOR security key now available on Android store

If you can’t be bothered buying a standalone security key for your SWTOR install, then you’ll definitely want to consider an app instead.

The iOS app for iPhone / iPad etc has been available for a week or so and now the Android version is available for free on the Android Market

If you own either device, the only certain thing is you’re mad not to secure your account with a security key.
