What To Do While The Servers Are Down: 17th April Edition

Although five hours isn’t long, this weeks server maintenance provides an opportunity to catch up on SWTOR news that you may have missed. Here’s what we’ve covered over the past week that is worth catching up with:

1. We have 10 Tauntaun fawn pets (which were given out to attendees at Pax East) up for grabs, closing at midnight tonight. Get your entry in.

2. Have a read through the final Patch 1.2 notes to see if you’ve missed anything.

Server downtime: April 17th 2012

A bit of a double-whammy maintenance this week, with a standard 5-hour game downtime and an extended 10-hour web downtime, at the end of which will be a redesigned SWTOR web presence.

The full details below, but here’s the time conversions:

AEST: 5pm-10pm Tuesday 17th (4pm-2am for SWTOR website)

AWST: 3pm-8pm Tuesday 17th (2pm-midnight for SWTOR website)

Hello everyone!

We will be bringing down servers for five hours on Tuesday, April 17th, 2012 from 2AM CDT (12AM PDT/3AM EDT/8AM BST/9AM CEST/5PM AEST) until 7AM CDT (5AM PDT/8AM EDT/1PM BST/2PM CEST/10PM AEST). All game servers will be offline during this period. This maintenance is expected to take no more than five hours, but could be extended.

For our new players, this weekly maintenance is done in order to make general improvements and to check performance of the game so that we can continue to provide a consistent, quality experience. Quite often (but not always) after a maintenance period there will be a patch to download. After the maintenance, please login via the launcher to download the latest patch. If your launcher was open during the maintenance, you must close and reopen it for a fresh login.

In addition to this, we will be performing maintenance on SWTOR.com for its new redesign. The website will be unavailable for ten hours from 1AM CDT (April 16th, 11PM PDT/2AM EDT/7AM BST/8AM CEST/4PM AEST) until 11AM CDT (9AM PDT/12PM EDT/5PM BST/6PM CEST/April 18th,2AM AEST). Once the site comes back up, the new redesign will be unveiled.

Legacy Names and Server Transfers: Clarification

There’s been a hell of a lot of interest in what the impact of the free server transfers will have on those who have finalised their legacy names. Stephen Reid has jumped in with some information, albeit with the disclaimer that nothing is finalised:

On question (2), you will be able to transfer multiple characters, although there will be some limitations (eg available slots on a server). Again, more details will come closer to the time, but you will not be limited to one character.

On question (3) the only current restrictions are listed in the FAQ. After transfer:

The character will no longer be a part of its guild – Guilds and guild membership will not be transferred to your new server. You will need to create or join a new guild on your new server.

Your Friends list will be reset – Friend lists are server specific, so you will need to repopulate your list with players from your new server.

Before you transfer your character, it is important to ensure the following:

The character has no items listed on the Galactic Trade Network (auction house) – active Galactic Trade Network listings will not be transferred to your new server.

The character has no items or credits in their mailbox – In-game mail will not be transferred to your new server. Make sure you have removed everything in your mailbox before initiating the transfer. Otherwise, the contents will be lost.

Just as big as the confirmation that legacy names won’t be affected, is the mention that more than one character is able to be transferred for free. As mentioned above, if you’ve got a whole bunch of toons and a server is verging on full, there may be an issue, but for the majority, your couple of alts will be transferred as well.

Over to you: does this put your mind at rest?

Australian Server Transfers: BioWare update

BioWare’s Stephen Reid has posted an update on the official forums on the delay between the local server availability and the late April implementation of free transfers. HIs response essentially mirrors that of the one Gabe Amatangelo gave us yesterday, but it’s still worth a read:

Hello everyone. I can absolutely understand the frustrations expressed here, and I appreciate that for the most part, you’re being constructive in your comments. Here’s a little more insight into the situation.

The character transfer system is being actively worked on by the development team. It’s a large, complex project, made more complicated by the Legacy System – and it has to work perfectly. As always, it is not the only task the team as a whole is undertaking, but it’s a priority. It has not been deliberately delayed, nor is it being ‘held back’ for any reason. As you know, the first stage of the system will be a one-off, optional transfer for those who are based in the regions defined in our FAQ. At some point after that, we’ll bring a more fully-featured character transfer system online for all to use.

I can understand the frustration of those of you who have been playing on the US servers and waiting for transfers. We know your enthusiasm and excitement for the game – you wouldn’t have taken the steps you did to get the game earlier than the official launch if you weren’t enthusiastic. We’re working as hard as we can to get the system in place. If we could have brought it online earlier, we would have. However, priorities post-launch had to be directed towards the game itself. The team’s been working flat-out to improve the game, including bug fixes and additional content.

When we announced our launch territories last year we knew many more fans were excited to play The Old Republic. That’s why we moved quickly to launch in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore, with more territories being lined up for future launches. Our primary focus when launching in any new territory has to be to reach more players. Ultimately, that’s best for the continuing success of the game. We want everyone who wishes to play on the new servers to be able to do so, hence character transfer being offered. With that said, in this case we felt it was important to get the game into the hands of new players as soon as possible. That, combined with our post-launch development priorities, meant that character transfer did not make our launch date for these territories.

The development team remains committed to delivering a robust character transfer system for all, with our first priority being for Asia-Pacific players. If we can bring the system to you earlier than expected, we will, but for now we’re aiming towards late April.

So it’s a call for patience folks – and there’s really not a lot of choices beside being patient, otherwise you’re going to have a frustrating seven or eight weeks…

SWTOR Asia-Pacific Server Details Announced

March the 1st isn’t just about SWTOR making a PR splash locally. For both veteran and new players, the availability of servers is the biggest news of the lot locally.

BioWare / EA have ‘announced’ the details of the local servers in that they’ve appeared on the Server Status page. This fact was picked up by the eagle-eyed Orin (thanks Orin!). BioWare’s Stephen Reid has also posted all the details (see below).

The names of the servers are:

PvP server: Master Dar’Nala

PvE server: Dalborra

RP-PvE server: Gav Daragon

Here’s a shot from the server status page:

And Stephen Reid’s announcement:

Good morning, or to those of you on the other side of the world, good morning… for tomorrow.

This week we officially launch Star Wars: The Old Republic in several new territories, including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Lots of more information on all aspects of the launch will be released tomorrow in an update to our official FAQ, but as we’ve heard requests for server names and timing, we thought we’d give you those details a little earlier.

Here’s our official launch timing. All servers will be online simultaneously at approx 5:01AM CST (Austin time), but with timezones straddling a date:

New Zealand: 12:01am NZDT (March 1st)
Australia: 10:01pm EDT (February 29th)
Singapore: 7:01pm SGT (February 29th)
Hong Kong: 7:01pm HKT (February 29th)

We’ll be launching with three initial servers dedicated to these territories. As previously mentioned, these servers are physically located in Australia:

Dalborra (PvE)
Master Dar’Nala (PvP)
Gav Daragon (RP PvE)

If demand requires we open additional servers, we have the hardware ready to go. Our Live Production team will be carefully monitoring server population and potential queues to ensure the best possible experience for players.

As mentioned many more details about the Oceanic launch will be forthcoming in tomorrow’s FAQ update, so look out for it!

In the same thread, Stephen Reid confirms in regard to the free server transfers:

Those emails are planned to be sent later this week, not long after official launch timing

Over to you: will you be transferring and if so to which server? If you’re a guild master and want to notify people which server you’re going to, feel free to post away in the comments!

Weekly server maintenance: 14th February 2012

One thing I hadn’t realised about BioWare, is that they’re all tragic romantics. That’s why they’ve thoughtfully made this week’s regular maintenance on Valentine’s Day. That way, you can spend some time with the woman / man of your dreams – or at least write a secret admirer note to your favourite SWTOR companion.

Ok, enough silly talk around what’s a normal scheduled maintenance. Here’s the local times you’ll not have game access:

AEDT: 7pm – 11pm Tuesday 14th Feb

AWST: 4pm – 8pm

NZDT: 9pm – 1am

Original details:

Scheduled Maintenance

Date: Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Time: 2AM CST (12AM PST/3AM EST/8AM GMT/9AM CET) until 6AM CST (4AM PST/7AM EST/12PM GMT/1PM CET)

All game servers and SWTOR.com will be offline during this period. This maintenance is expected to take no more than four hours.

Thank you for your patience as we maintain service for Star Wars™: The Old Republic™.

SWTOR oceanic server location confirmed!

You’ll need to listen to our most recent podcast for Stephen Reid’s take on Oceanic servers, but here’s the take-home messages:

1. The servers WILL be physically located in Australia

2. The specific location is unconfirmed at this stage but is likely to be Sydney or Melbourne

3. A broader announcement on local launch will be made in coming days and there will be no great surprises on the launch date.

We’ll have a full transcript of the Q&A up later today, but if you want the info hot off the wires, then listen to the podcast.

UPDATE (29th February 2012): The full details on server names can be found here.

Quick patch incoming plus extended maintenance on the 31st January

If you’ve played SWTOR over the past week you’ve probably heard some murmurs of discontent around the game’s performance, if not experiencing it yourself. Actually murmurs have been shouts in some quarters and there’s not doubt BioWare is listening as they’re bringing down the servers sometime Saturday night Australian / New Zealand time – once we have a confirmation of an exact time we’ll post it.

Additionally, there’s an extended weekly maintenance of eight hours or so:

Scheduled Maintenance

Date: Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Time: 2AM CST (12AM PST/3AM EST/8AM GMT/9AM CET) until 10AM CST (8AM PST/11AM EST/4PM GMT/5PM CET)

All game servers and swtor.com will be offline during this period. This maintenance is expected to take no more than eight hours.

So that’s:

– 7pm on Tuesday 31st until 3am Wednesday 1st Feb AEDT
– 4pm to midnight AWST
– 9pm to 5am NZDT

So tonight don’t plan on any extended playing time in SWTOR and Tuesday is out too. Never fear though, we’ll have plenty of SWTOR info for your to trawl through, including a brand new podcast being recorded Sunday night.
