BioWare interview at Comic-Con

jar-jar-binks2 Gaming site Ten Ton Hammer pulled off an interview with a bunch of the BioWare team at Comic-Con over the weekend. There’s lots of the expected “we can tell you that” featured but also some good insights into development to date.

You can read it in full here, but here are some of the more notable comments:

1. On combat mechanics

I mean, we haven’t even shown anything to the public yet past level eight. We have really, really exciting character classes that each feel totally awesome. If you’re a guy that just wants to power through a bunch of those and just have a really compelling combat experience at the top of the game, that’s an option for you. We’re already proving that to ourselves, and if folks just want to fight – and that’s the pillar that they love – they’re going to be very satisfied.

Interpretation: World of Warcraft tanks, come on in, we love you and want you.

2. On combat (again)

We really just wanted to emulate the cinematic, action-packed Star Wars combat. The decisions that Jeff [Dobson]’s combat team makes are based on those (sic) tenants – that it needs to be full of action and visceral. It needs to feel like it has an influence on the game, and it needs to be reactive in that the enemies are reacting to what you’re doing.

Interpretation: you’ll be able to hit things, make then hurt and it’ll be obvious they’re hurtin’

3. On what will make the cut

There wasn’t anything in the game that was implemented just because “it fits.” The bounty hunter needed to go in simply because it was a major part of the universe and was vital to almost every element of Star Wars.

That said, there are areas of the expanded universe that we could take and run with if they fit every part of our game. But we’re not going to look at pieces and just include them in the game simply because they exist.

Interpretation: We don’t care how much you want Gungans in SWTOR, it’s never going to happen, even if it costs us plush toy sales. (See, there was a reason for the Jar Jar Binks pic that may have made you vomit in your mouth a little).

Flippancy aside, there’s obviously some big efforts being out into making combat something different from current MMOs. This was a difference touted by Age of Conan‘s developers – things can only go up from there for BioWare you’d think.

SWTOR: Comic-Con news roundup

swtor-fight The SWTOR PR-people have been on a roll in recent months with a regular drip-feed of new information to keep interest well and truly piqued. This weekend saw the SWTOR show roll into San Diego’s Comic-Con.

In the lead-up, IGN conducted a Q&A session with the SWTOR team (Dallas Dickinson – Senior Content Producer, BioWare, and Jake Neri, Producer at LucasArts), which is well worth a read (there’s also a good summary here), although it’s riddled with “we can’t comment yet”.

As far as news from Comic-Con itself:

1. You can listen to the full audio of the Comic-Con panel here, thanks to Darth Hater. Beware though, there’s lots of fan screaming / cheering 😉

2. Not surprisingly, there were no ground-breaking new announcements although there’s now the promise of a more extensive gameplay demonstration in August at gamescom in Germany.

What’s your take? Did you attend the panel session and if so, what was the vibe like?

Fellow Republican: Mos Eisley Radio

moseisleyradio Time for another shout-out to a fellow SWTOR site. This time it’s Mos Eisley Radio. Podcasts are the focus of the team, and mighty fine podcasts they are.

Production values are high, there’s plenty of news discussed and there’s also something to learn: I now know Mandalorians aren’t a race, instead being more like a guild or clan. It’s fair to say the duo presenting are a very knowledgeable pair, so tune in to try and catch an error – I think you’ll be lucky if you do.

A fun AND educational podcast – what else could you want?

Fellow Republican: Darth Hater

darth-hater One regular feature on TOROZ will be putting the spotlight on other SWTOR sites.

I thought I’d start out first with Darth Hater, which released their first podcast this week. It may be the first but they have a good patter going and cover a good range of issues. It’ll be interesting to see what interviews they score out of the upcoming Comic-Con. Overall, the site and podcast have great promise and hell, you can’t beat a good pun.

I’ve added these guys to my podcast feed and to our links. If you’ve got a blog or podcast to promote, drop us a line.

Voice as immersion: more information

BioWare and LucasArts have released a short piece in how voice is being used in SWTOR to increase the immersion of players.

There’s some interesting shots of the game action itself interpersed between comments from developers.

I have to admit that the gameplay shots have taken me aback a little – particularly the avatar close-ups. They just don’t seem that much evolved from previous iterations of the Star Wars franchise I’ve played on consoles. Here’s the video in full:

E3 2009 – Bioware and Lucas Arts’ press conference

June’s E3 expo saw Bioware‘s Ray Muzyka and LucasArt‘s Darrell Rodriguez front the assembled throng to outline progress on SWTOR. Not surprisingly, there was no talk of release dates but there’s some other interesting information given, including the disclosure that all players and non-player characters will be fully voiced, apparently making it one of the largest voice-over undertakings in gaming history.
